Gloucester, Cambridge and Sudbury all finished Round-Robin Play in Second Place.   Ottawa got to the Semi-Finals the hard way.   OTTAWA WON TWO MINI-GAMEs to advance to Semi Finals against Manitoba.

GLOUCESTER BELLES WIN SILVER MEDAL, LOSING TO ALTA IN OVERTIME IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The Ontario Belles from Gloucester lost 6 - 5 to Alberta in a heart wrenching thriller on the final Saturday afternoon of the 2000 Canadian Ringette Championships. Alberta scored 1 minute and 19 seconds into overtime play, to secure the victory.   Alta had scored less than two minutes into the game. Colleen Hagan evened the score four minutes later assisted by Erin Lepage and Katie Allen, only to have Alta take a 2 - 1 lead just a minute after that.

The Devils fought back hard with Leslie Jimmo tying the score half way through the first period assisted by Allen and Julie Bosse.   Alta took the lead 3 - 2 with 5 minutes to play in the first period.   That was the half time score, Alta 3 - Gloucester 2.

Leslie Jimmo scored to even the score once again 5 and a half minutes into the second half.   Alberta equal to the task took a 4 - 3 lead again just 27 seconds later.   Erin Lepage and Katie Allen took turns scoring and assisting to give Ontario a 5 - 4 lead with just 8 minutes 12 seconds to play in the game.   However as was the case all afternoon... when Gloucester scored, Alberta countered quickly. This time only 21 seconds later with 7:51 to play the score was knotted at 5 - 5. It would stay that way till the end of regulation time.

Alberta, leaving nothing to chance scored on the first shift of overtime to win the National Belle Championship.

GOLD ALBERTA - SILVER - ONTARIO.

Congratulations Gloucester for such a valiant effort.   How close it was!

In their final round-robin game against Alberta, the Gloucester Belles held a 4 - 3 lead at half time, but gave up a goal in the second period to go into overtime.   Alta scored in overtime to win and finish with an indentical 6 and 1 win loss record to Ontario, but advanced directly to the Final as a result of yesterdays victory.         The Devils advanced into the finals by eliminating British Columbia 5-4 in overtime semi-final play Friday night.   Scoring for Gloucester was Tami Kerr - two goals, including the winning goal in overtime play.   Diane Ouimet - two goals, Catherine Rochon one goal and one assist, Marie-France Rancourt and Katie Petherick - two assists, Jackie Gaudet and Julie Bosse - one assist. The Individual Achievement Award was presented to Diane Ouimet. The Defensive Game Star Award was awarded to Leslie Jimmo from Gloucester.

OTTAWA JUNIORS WIN BRONZE MEDAL AT THE NATIONALS.

Ottawa Juniors lost 6 - 4 in Semi-Final action against Manitoba to win the Bronze Medal.   For Ottawa Katie Raven, Jessica Boersma, both scored one goal and added an assist. Stacy Cunningham and Allison Shoobert chipped in a goal apiece, while Katie Lugg had two assists, and Jenna McBride one assist.

The Game's Individual Achievement Award was presented to Julie Dessureault for outstanding play in the Semi-Final.

Ottawa had to win two Mini-Games just to get to the Semi-Final earlier this afternoon.   The first Ottawa Mini-Game win was over BC 2 - 1 and the second was 5 - 4 in overtime against Sask.       Ottawa Juniors lost to Alberta 5 - 4 in their final round-robin game at the Nationals.   They saw their record drop to 5 and 3, with the loss to Alta, putting them in a four way tie for 2nd place with BC, Sask, and Manitoba all with 10 points.   Good Fortune smiled on them though, because in the Nationals you cannot be eliminated from Medal Round Play on a tie-breaker.

The first ten minute, plus overtime, mini game began at 11:50 BC time with Ontario playing BC for the right to advance to a second Mini-Game at 12:30 BC Time against Sask. The semi Final started at 3:30. Perhaps the emotional and physical demands of these three one goal games this morning took their toll in close checking hard fought Semi-Final loss.   Congratulations Ottawa on a fine showing, the Bronze Medal will look pretty special in a week or two, and will be great incentive for next year!

SUDBURY WINS SILVER IN 4 - 3 O/T LOSS.

The Ontario Intermediates from Sudbury lost in overtime to Alberta 4 - 3 Saturday afternoon in the National Championship game. After two previous games against Alberta were one goal wins for each todays final was indicative of that play. It took overtime to find the winner.

Scoring for Ontario was: Stephanie Cox from Barb Bautista) at 19:10 of the second period, then Karen Duguay also assisted by Barb Bautista and Stephanie Cox) at 13:15.   Sarah Miller, assisted by Tracy Moxam and Nancy Seymour) put Sudbury up by two goals with 10:27 to play.   It was not enough.   Alberta scored a minute later... and broke Ontario hearts with a shot and goal at the buzzer. 00.08 seconds to play to be exact.   Then they won the Gold medal, scoring just one minute into overtime with two Ontario players in the penalty box.

The Championship loss came after beating BC 2-1 in semi-final play late Friday night. Sudbury scorers were Kim Pages and Stephanie Cox. The game Individual Achievement Award went to Kim Pages. The Defensive Game Star Award was presented to Sarah Miller.

CAMBRIDGE DEBS WIN NATIONAL GOLD BEATING QUEBEC 3 - 2.

The Ontario Debs from Cambridge defeated Quebec 3 - 2 in the Championship Game of the Nationals. Lisa Newton, Nicki Madsen and Kristen Mahar scored the Ontario goals. Gloucester player Melissa Lauder created two assists to help in the victory.

Cambridge charged into the finals against Quebec after downing Sask 7-4 in semi-final play Friday night. Scorers for the Ontario Debs include: Petrice Cavar - 3 goals and 1 assist, Lisa Newton - 2 goals and 1 assist, Jennifer Gaudet - 3 assists, Nicki Madsen and Laura Stix - 2 assists, Stefanie Blacker and Melissa Lauder (a Gloucester Player) - one goal each.

The Games Individual Achievement Award was presented to Petrice Cavar. The Defensive Game Star Award was presented to Jennifer Gaudet.

Cambridge was nearly eliminated from medal contention earlier in the day. It started with a 4 way tie for 2nd place with Alberta, British Columbia, and Sask, all with with 3 wins.       It was that close... Last game finish 2nd, or a two way tie forth.   They won their last game of the day to advance to the Semi-Final.
