Things You Should Know When You Buy Prepaid Cards |
![]() |
Prepaid cards are those cards purchased for later use in placing telephone calls. Since the card is paid for up front, consumers should be wary that the card may not work when they later attempt to use it. Some criminals sell cards they know don't work. Even if purchased from a valid supplier, you should ensure you have recourse if the card is defective or if the quality of service is inadequate. |

| Look for cards from an established company with a good reputation. If unsure of the company, test out their service by purchasing a low value card (i.e. $5); if you find the service is satisfactory, then buy a more expensive card. | |
| Never purchase cards from people who approach you at payphones, train stations, etc. unless they carry company ID. | |
| Does the company provide support in the event of problems? Look for a toll-free 1-800 or 1-888 number on the card. | |
| Check whether the service can prompt you in a language you understand. |
| If you purchase a prepaid card, are not satisfied with the service and are unable to contact the supplier, the International Telecard Association at 1-800-333-3513 might be able to assist you. |
